La new wave en quelques mots
La période new wave s’étale de la fin des années 70 au milieu des années 80. Mais la new wave englobe plusieurs styles : certaines musiques tirent vers le disco, comme celle de Blondie. On parle plutôt de new wave gothique pour The Cure, ou de new wave punk pour Gang of Four.
Punk, synthétiseur et boîte à rythme
Le terme new wave est apparu dans la presse au milieu des années 70, juste après l’explosion du punk. D’ailleurs, entre 1976 et 1977, les termes punk et new wave sont parfaitement interchangeables. Mais ce qui différencie les deux courants, c’est le synthétiseur et la boîte à rythme. Dès 1978, ces instruments deviennent accessibles aux jeunes musiciens qui avaient écouté du punk, mais aussi David Bowie ou Kraftwerk.

La grande famille de la new wave
La new wave est un courant musical foncièrement anglais et underground, avec des formations comme New Order ou Siouxsie and the Banshees. Le genre va ensuite exploser avec Depeche Mode, Duran Duran ou The Cure. Citons encore Tears For Fears qui, lui, est le groupe de new wave romantique par excellence.
